Making a Wellbeing Website

My Collaborative Process

Women collaborating

I like to work on a cycle that's roughly weekly, and starts each week with a video call.

A video call makes sure we're on the same page. During each call we'll clarify, make decisions and set out who's doing what for the week ahead.

The sample process here is for a small website. With a larger site we'd repeat steps, for example designing a few pages at a time and doing more feedback steps. Week 1 usually clarifies the scale of a project.

  • Week 1: Discovery

This week’s call is a discovery call to find out about who you are and what you need. Likely questions might be:

    • Who is your ideal client?
    • Describe your clients’ experience of working with you from beginning to end
    • What sets you apart?
    • What is the goal of this website?
    • Who is visiting the website, what prompts them to come?
    • What topics, products and ideas need a place on the site? Is it a “sell one idea” site or a product catalogue or a brochure?
    • What does “wild success” look like to you?

I’ll follow up during the week with a proposal, outlining:

    • Estimated scale of site (timeline / size / costs)
    • What I see as the tools and pages needed to achieve what you want

All being well you would commit to the project by paying the deposit outlined in the plan and scheduling the next video call.

Your homework will be to prepare for the coming video call about content.

  • Week 2: Content

This week’s video call is a deep-dive into the content for each page of your site. Assets like images and videos you will ideally send before the meeting, but you might think of some more things to send while we talk.

Most people don’t come to me with content all written, so I’ll use this meeting to interview you about what a customer might hope to find out on each page of your site. I’ll turn your answers into starter content for you, so that when we finish your site is good-to-go. Remember, the best websites evolve over time so this starter content doesn’t need to be the end of the story.

During the week I’ll build out a first “crappy draft” of your site, something to throw ideas at you and see what sticks.

  • Week 3: Feedback

In this week’s video call we’ll have a mockup website in front of us. We’ll discuss broad strokes of which elements of the design you do and don’t like, and major wording changes needed etc. I have software that lets us make notes on the site itself, so we'll annotate the heck out of your site.

During the week, I’ll re-draft the site.

  • Week 4: Quality Control

In an ideal world there would be no more feedback here, but how often is the world ideal? There’s always something and as long as we’re not talking about a change to the scale of the project, that’s fine and included. Large changes like “I forgot to mention we need a whole member’s area” will trigger a re-negotiation.

Assuming only a few trivial changes from you, the rest of quality control involves:

    • Test site on various devices (phone, desktop etc)
    • Test site on screen-reader for blind people
    • Review site SEO to see if keywords could be better represented
    • Check site security best practices
    • Connect Google Analytics
  • Week 5: Go Live / Transition to Maintenance

This week’s video call is the final “yes, go live” approval from you. I’ll also discuss what’s involved in ongoing site maintenance, and other marketing activities you can do to get the most from your site like interviews linking to the site, and other ways to be visible.

You’ll get your site completion invoice and I’ll set up your Aftercare plan if that’s what you’ve selected.

    Your site is ALIVE!
